Evaluating and Treating Pediatric Breathing & Posture
This course will introduce the attendee to the importance of trunk and head control as well as proper breathing development and mechanics. It will provide exposure to Mary Massery’s research and her Soda Pop Can Model for breathing mechanics as well as provide evaluation techniques to improve postural control and breathing. We will discuss how the Surestep TLSO & DCO can positively affect breathing and postural control with various modifications.
This course is intended for physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech therapists that are interested in improving evaluation and treatment techniques for their patients with poor postural control and breathing. It will be a combination of lecture and lab to allow the attendees to have hands on experience with evaluation and treatment solutions.
At the conclusion of the course, the attendee will be able to demonstrate general knowledge of the normal sequence of quiet breathing, ventilatory strategies to implement during treatment, various breathing patterns and be able to identify their own primary breathing pattern. They will also be able to formulate daily practice plans for evaluation, treatment and orthotic management of their patients with poor head and trunk control and breathing.
PART 2 (3 – 6 p.m.):

GOMEZ ORTHOTIC SYSTEMS
Certification Course for Conservative Treatment of Spine, Deformities by a 3 dimensional approach using CAD/CAM technologies
This one day course provides the practicing orthotist with an in-depth overview of the “Gomez Orthotic Spine System” approach to the comprehensive management of spinal pathologies, including idiopathic scoliosis, neuromuscular disorders as well as degenerative spine disorders.
The emphasis is on proper overall and segmental full body / spine alignment and balance. The importance of a detailed clinical evaluation combined with objective assessment of tri-planar spinal flexibility. Successful treatment of spinal deformities and instabilities is based on the development of a comprehensive bio-medical plan starting from the feet up. Participants will learn to use simple tools to measure, scan and record clinical signs to be used in orthosis design. Participants will interact with patients and the course leader in both evaluation and treatment planning sessions using the Gomez Orthotics Spine System.
